→♫ .First Breakdown. ♫←

My approach to music is a little different from most people. I am usually a very judgmental person, but when it comes to music I have to listen to it three or four times do make an opinion on it. It takes a while for me to figure out exactly how I feel. My tastes are broad but limited. I listen to a variety of artists, as you will see in my blog, but once I have a certain opinion of an artist than it rarely changes. So I’m kind of complex but simplistic at the same time.

The first song I’ll be reviewing is “Dreams Money Can Buy”, by Canadian rapper Aubrey “Drake” Graham.
It is rumored to be his intro on his second album, “Take Care”, which is slated to be released the last quarter of 2011. The song samples British songwriter, Jai Paul’s demo “BSTU.” Drake released the song himself on his personal blog, when doing so the rapper stated, “A song that I felt the need to share. Not my single, just a piece of my story."

Critics seem to like the style of the song. Djbooth.net stated “execution is eminently fresh” and NewYoungElite.com called the track “an exciting glimpse into Take Care, in both production and lyricism.” Consumers have also had a positive reaction to the song, on Hiphopdx.com over 175 users reviewed the song, and more than half of the reviewers gave the song a perfect five out of five. Among these reviews were comments like “Hard sample + tight drums + Drake flow = surprisingly good song.
Digging the new style”, and “This is a dope track. Drake destroyed it. I don’t look for Drake expecting him to be street. He's not street nor is he trying to be.

Personally I like the song. It’s very smooth and laid back. The lyrics are the best part of the song, I find them clever and somewhat racy, but they fit the overall vibe the song is going for.  The song describes Drakes struggle of balancing his new found fame. I think its original, the song actually talks about his experiences he has had or things he deals with, instead of the usual rap songs that only talk about money, girls, and sex. Don’t get me wrong he does talk about all of those things in this song, but the song feels more like a diary, then a typical rap song.  I believe Hip-Hop fans will love it, but the mainstream public won't. Check it out for yourself and decide.
