Copy & Paste is the first single from Daniel “Diggy” Simmons, the sixteen year old rapper and son of rap legend Joseph “ Rev Run” Simmons, from the group Run DMC. Diggy’s claim to fame before he was a rapper was appearing on his father’s reality show on MTV, but since being signed to Atlantic Records in March of 2010 the rapper has made a name for his-self. After launching three mix-tapes, that were received very well, there is a lot of buzz surrounding the young rapper. People expect a lot from Diggy, because of who his father and what he has achieved. Others believe his wealthy upbringing hinders his ability to rap.
So, what are the critics saying? RapRadar.com stated “No plagiarizing here. Daniel Simmons does more than just right click and left click for the first single off his upcoming debut album dropping on Atlantic. This kid is off to a good start.” The critics seem to think that the song is good, nothing phenomenal but not the worst of the bunch either. Bloggers have had a different reaction. One user on realtalkny.uproxx.com stated “Song is kinda crazy. The beat is a banger and his flow was perfect for this. I like it! Diggy surprised me with this one.” Another stated “The beat was hot I’m a little disappointed, expect him to come with better lyrics.” The quotes show an example how mixed the responses of the single are have been, bloggers seem to hate it or love it.
I feel the song was designed to fit into the pop music mold; the songs that were on Diggy’s mix-tapes were more edgy and raw. I think he needed to smooth out his style to sell records, which happens to a lot of artist in the hip-hop industry. Overall I think the song is gimmicky, but for a sixteen year old the song is good and it will definitely sell.

So I listened to Diggy's track and honestly I feel like with today's youth the beat alone is gonna be enough to propel this song pretty far. Unfortunately, his lyrics seemed to fall flat. I think that since his father was in one the biggest rap groups of all time he needs to stray away from being like all the other young rappers and stop talking about shoes and texting. However, this generation is completely geared towards technology and materialism that I guess he's just rapping to stay relevant.
ReplyDeleteBlackson, I agree. I think the lyrics are basic and bland but also I think he did that on for a reason. His fan base mostly consists of teens, so if his lyrics were too complex, he could lose fans.
ReplyDeleteI remember Diggy from Run's House. End on that shows it was evident that he had a great sense of creativity. For example he normally talked about his blog, which showed his creative side as he talked about his style and hip-hop culture. The fact of the matter people can say all they want that is kid is living off his father's name, when in reality he can flow. This kid can really rhyme...unlike his brother who I think didn't get the rapping gene (but that is a different story).
ReplyDeleteI think it's sad that all these kids with rich parents can become famous for no reason. Diggy is spoiled and will become popular solely on his name and who his dad is. Careers that used to require talent no longer do. Listen to the radio and tell me why it sucks. It sucks because record label corporations pay for the same song to be played over and over again. Eventually, it will get stuck in your head. It is down to a science and I think it's sad.
ReplyDelete@isthisusedtoo. I agree, I think his family name will take him a lot further than his actual talent. I actually think he has some talent, he just fell flat on this song. As far as the radio thing, i agree. I don't like most of the songs on the radio yet i find them running through my head at random times.
