She Ain't You

Michael Jackson is the reason I started to love music. His music was everything to me growing up; I can remember being a kid and watching his videos and listening to music for hours at a time. His style of music captivated me like no one else ever has and probably ever will. Michael Jackson inspired generations of individuals, and his influence is still reflected in music today.

One singer who publicly acknowledges his admiration and love for Jackson is R&B Singer Chris Brown. Brown has even dedicated his newest single to him. “She ain’t you”, the fourth single from his album “FAME”, is a perfect example of how Jackson still inspires music today. The song samples the track “Human Nature.” “She ain’t you” depicts a story of a guy who cannot get over a girl from his past, even though he is dating someone else.

The bloggers seem more interested in the music video than the song. In the video Brown pays homage to Jackson by dressing up like him and incorporating his signature dance moves into the choreography.  The video has had great reviews by critics and bloggers alike, but when the video outshines the song that says a lot.

The song is a cross between R&B and pop. The lyrics are very simple and catchy. What I personally like about song is that the lyrics is that they are very descriptive, Brown does a great job of putting emotion in the song, but the  as a whole it doesn’t seem to compare to the original. Jackson’s version of the song had powerful lyrics, Brown’s version is a watered down commercial version of the original. I feel as if Chris Brown main focus is to sell records, not to make meaningful music. Overall the song isn’t that bad, but when sampling a track as big as “Human Nature” there is a lot to live up to and I think Brown fell short.

  1. I like that you compared these two artists, especially since Chris is so determined to do it himself. I agree that his video and song fall short of Michael Jackson's repertoire but and I don't think he should be so strongly emulating him. I think Chris should spend more time developing his own image outside of the 'i beat my girlfriend and I'm sorry' or 'I love Michael Jackson' personas. I like him, but mostly because I like Michael Jackson.

  2. I like that post and also the fact that you did a post about MJ. I agree with the last comment, Chris is very talented and his last album prove that. He should focus more on being artist to develop his talent than going above and beyond to mess it up.

  3. Michael Jackson is definitely a large influence on music overall, while Chris Brown maybe one of the artists most influenced my Jackson. I actually enjoyed this song right away (before watching the video). I think the video is very playful and fun, where as the lyrical content of the song take a more serious path. Brown does a great job of meshing the two feeling together. In my opinion, I think so many people are more interested in the video because they do not necessarily have to listen to the lyrics, which many cause they to think about their own relationship.
